When I was taking a geography class, I remember having map quizzes on the location of rivers. Participants were able to recognize the tones again when grouped in the pattern they initially heard them in.Īs I read about these studies, I began to think about times when I had used grouping to remember similar things or things that were in close proximity to each other.

GESTALT PRINCIPLE OF SIMILARITY SERIES

This study found that it was easier for participants to recognize specific circles when the individual circles in question were all grouped together.Īn experiment on tone recognition linked the Gestalt principle of similarity to the way people remember and recognize a series of tones. I read another study using different patterns of colored circles that linked the Gestalt principle of similarity to benefitting visual working memory. The takeaway from this experiment was that after being introduced to triplet patterns, people were able to recognize those triplets again when presented again, or within larger groups. These principles are not hard to recognize or understand, but they did get me thinking about how these grouping systems affect study strategies.Īfter deciding to research the connection between these principles and studying, I read a study that emphasized how Gestalt grouping principles facilitate in visual statistical learning. In the principle of similarity, you group things that are similar. According to the Robinson-Riegler Cognitive Psychology: Applying the Science of the Mind textbook, in the principle of proximity, you group things that are near each other. In learning about these principles of perception, I noticed that grouping is a common theme. To combat this academic tragedy (okay maybe not a tragedy, but an issue nonetheless) I would like to offer a study suggestion inspired by the Gestalt Principles of perception. Surely I can’t be the only person with this problem… that would be quite embarrassing. Even in subjects that really piqued my interest, I would still struggle to find a way to study material and actually remember it when test time came around. I must admit, in all 15 years of my schooling, I still have not found a foolproof way to study.
